The Target Data Breach

What You Need to Know

The retail giant Target recently announced that hackers had compromised their systems and stole data for more than 40 million credit and debit cards used at Target used at Target stores and online between November 27 and December 15. Since then, the company announced another 70 million customer accounts were also compromised at the same time, with name, address, phone, and email being exposed.

This is the largest data breach in U.S. history, affecting up to 110 million people throughout North America. The real threat is that this stolen information could end up in the hands of identity thieves including organized crime groups.

Brian Krebs, a well-known security journalist has reported that stolen credit and debit card account numbers are now appearing on black-market websites in batches of 1 million cards and selling from $20 to more than $100 per card.

If you shopped at Target during the holidays, there are several things you can do to watch for fraud:
  1. Check your credit/debit card transactions closely. Go online and review recent transactions; don't wait for a paper statement.
  2. Report suspicious transactions. Contact the card issuer immediately if you see anything that doesn't look right.
  3. Watch your credit reports. You can get a free annual credit report from each of the 3 main credit bureaus, or you can get more frequent reports and alerts with our iDefend Elite plan.
  4. Act fast. If you believe you're a victim of ID theft, call your iDefend team at (801) 724-6211 immediately.
Official information from Target about the breach is available here. Stay tuned for more details released from Target.

Monitoring Your Credit:

We strongly recommend in addition to watching your bank statements and card transactions, it’s important to get daily credit monitoring and check your credit report. The iDefend Elite plan includes 24/7 online access to your Experian credit report and alerts to any changes in your credit profile.

If you don't already have a credit monitoring service, now is the time with all the data breaches going on and the private information of millions of people being exposed recently.
